Paul B. Brickfield
Paul Brickfield is a criminal defense attorney. He has successfully represented individuals facing serious charges in the federal courts of New Jersey, the state courts of New Jersey and the municipal courts of New Jersey. He is a former high ranking federal and state prosecutor. He served as the Deputy Chief of the United States Attorney's Office in Newark, New Jersey where he prosecuted and supervised other attorneys in the prosecution of political corruption cases in New Jersey. In addition, while an Assistant United States Attorney at the same office, Mr. Brickfield prosecuted a wide variety of cases, including tax evasion, bank and loan fraud, significant drug dealing and other major offenses. He was recognized for his work with the United States Department of Justice Special Achievement Award. As a federal prosecutor, he gained the skills and reputation necessary to defend people in the federal courts in New Jersey.
Mr. Brickfield is also a former First Assistant Bergen County, New Jersey Prosecutor, which is the second ranking position in that office. As First Assistant, Mr. Brickfield supervised approximately 50 assistant prosecutors. In addition, Mr. Brickfield personally investigated and/or tried a number of significant cases, including cases involving sexual assault, homicide, corrupt policemen and violent crime.
Mr. Brickfield entered private practice as a criminal defense lawyer in 1993. In the following 20 years, he has been recognized as a quality criminal defense attorney. He is a certified criminal trial attorney in the State of New Jersey. He has taken at least nine cases to verdict in addition to negotiating many positive resolutions for his clients. He has helped clients avoid criminal charges. He knows how to battle in court, as well as to reach appropriate resolutions. He has been and will be a zealous advocate for his clients.
Mr. Brickfield in his past 20 years has successfully represented a wide array of individuals in all types of criminal issues. Among his clients are as follows:
- Complete acquittal of a client in a major drug distribution case
- Obtaining complete dismissal of the indictment of a union official based on a successful motion proving prosecutorial misconduct
- Obtaining a probationary sentence for a high-level corporate official in a major government fraud case
- Representing a number of individuals involved with mortgage and bank frauds to successful resolutions
- Representing a physician in a Oxycotin distribution scheme resulting in a probationary sentence
- Representing former campaign aides and political leaders to resolution in corruption cases
- Achieving a complete acquittal of a doctor accused of sexual assault on a minor
- Achieving a complete acquittal of a defendant charged with possession of over 2,000 kilos of cocaine
In the municipal courts, Mr. Brickfield has likewise been a successful advocate. He has represented literally hundreds of students and other individuals charged with DWI and other serious traffic matters, underage possession of alcohol, possession of drugs and domestic violence offenses. His clients include a number of prominent individuals, including several professional athletes. Mr. Brickfield brings the same level of care and devotion to municipal court cases as he does to federal and state court felony matters.
Mr. Brickfield has represented individuals in certain important civil matters, including proceedings before disciplinary boards for doctors, lawyers, nurse and pharmacists. Mr. Brickfield has also represented individuals in major personal injury actions with two of the cases settling with $1 million or more awarded to his clients.
Mr. Brickfield has been recognized by his peers as shown by his election a number of years ago as a trustee of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey. Mr. Brickfield has been named a Super Lawyer for both New Jersey and New York. Mr. Brickfield is active in many associations and Bar groups, including the Federal Bar of New Jersey and the Bergen County Bar Association.
Education and Background
Mr. Brickfield is a graduate of the College of Holy Cross Class of 1978 with a degree in political science. He graduated magna cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Brickfield then attended the University of Virginia School of Law and graduated in 1981. He began his legal career in the litigation department of the Wall Street firm of Shearman & Sterling in New York City.
