Teacher indicted for alleged sex with students

|

According to the Acting Essex County Prosecutor, a 35-year-old teacher was indicted on allegations she had sex with six male students, all underage at the time. The woman reportedly was a language arts teacher at Columbia High School in Maplewood, a position that she had held for nine years.

The woman was initially arrested for charges involving five underage students on Sept. 17. When the case was sent to the grand jury, a sixth teen had apparently come forward as well. The grand jury handed down indictments on 40 counts of aggravated sexual assault as well as endangering the welfare of a minor.

The teacher is currently out of custody on $500,000 bail. Her next scheduled court date is March 6, when she will appear in Superior Court to answer her charges. According to the allegations against her, the sex acts reportedly took place in a variety of locations, including the teacher's car and on school property. The reports do not indicate how much time the woman is facing if she is convicted as charged. Reports do indicate the teacher is a mother to two young boys.

People who are charged with a sex crime may face especially severe penalties. In some cases, people may have to register as a sex offender for the rest of their lives. In the event a person is a parent to children, courts may also order they not be allowed to have contact with their own children. Sex offenses may bring long periods of incarceration and probation as well. Those who are accused of a sex crime may want to seek the help of a criminal defense attorney who accepts sex offense cases. An attorney may be able to help mount an aggressive defense against the charges.
