3 Ways to Best Prevent a DUI on Labor Day

Tips for Labor Day Weekend 2020

The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates 390 people may die on US roads this Labor Day holiday period.

Falling on the first Monday of September, Labor Day is a national federal holiday that celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers, who enhance the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. While Americans use this opportunity to enjoy their much-needed day off and celebrate the end of summer, it’s no surprise that barbeques, beaches and plenty of booze are staple pieces of this holiday.

As a result, now is an important time to discuss how to best prevent a costly Labor Day weekend. Examine the following tips for how to best avoid a DUI:

  1. Plan ahead: If you intend to drink, don’t assume you can beat a DUI by eating lots of food, drinking water and waiting a couple of hours before driving. You may think you’re “good to drive,” but the reality is, you most likely aren’t. As a result, we advise you to ask a friend or family member to be your designated driver (DD) or utilize ridesharing companies like Uber or Lyft.
  2. Stay overnight or book a hotel: If you planned on staying sober but changed your mind at the party, you need a plan B. It’s not too late to make new plans, as these changes happen all the time. If you can’t secure a DD and are unable to use ridesharing services or taxis, sleepover at the place you’re drinking at (if possible). But if you’re not celebrating Labor Day at a house, then consider booking a hotel or motel. It may seem inconvenient and costly at first, but nothing is more costly than losing your life or getting a DUI charge.
  3. Drive defensively: Even if you’re making safe driving decisions by staying sober, other people are not. That’s why you should anticipate bad drivers throughout Labor Day weekend and do your best to steer clear of them. Swerving and speeding drivers are all too common during this holiday, so it is in your best interests to avoid such motorists at all costs.
