Felony Charges-Indictable Offenses
Serious criminal charges require the attention of an experienced and dedicated attorney. If you are under investigation for a crime or have been arrested, contact a criminal defense attorney at Brickfield & Donahue.
Located in River Edge, New Jersey, our firm offers aggressive and experienced criminal defense services for people throughout central and northern New Jersey. In addition to handling disorderly persons offenses in municipal court, we handle complex criminal matters in state and federal courts.
New Jersey law, unlike other States, breaks down criminal offenses into
"Indictable Crimes" and "Disorderly Persons Offenses."
Most other States refer to such criminal offenses as "Felonies"
What are Indictable Crimes?
Under New Jersey law, there are 4 levels of Indictable Crimes. Most other States refer to what New Jersey calls "Indictable Crimes" as "Felonies." "Indictables" are "graded" as First Degree Crimes (the most serious), Second Degree Crimes, Third Degree Crimes and Fourth Degree Crimes (the least serious).
- A First Degree Crime is punishable by 10-20 years imprisonment
- A Second Degree Crime is punishable by 5-10 years imprisonment
- A Third Degree Crime is punishable by 3-5 years imprisonment\
- A Fourth Degree Crime is punishable by up to 18 months imprisonment.
Some of the indictable offenses (referred to informally as felony charges) we handle on behalf of clients include:
- Sex crimes
- Assault/aggravated assault
- Weapons offenses
- Drug crimes
- Aggravated manslaughter
The attorneys at our firm work closely with clients to understand the facts most relevant to their case. Our firm offers comprehensive criminal defense services. In many cases, using a team of outside investigative experts, we conduct our own investigation of the case to determine the best possible way to approach your case.
Attorneys Paul B. Brickfield and Joseph R. Donahue are former prosecutors with extensive knowledge of local courts, laws, and trial procedures. As experienced negotiators and trial lawyers, they aggressively seek the best possible result on behalf of each client they serve.
Although our firm always considers plea agreements as a way to resolve criminal cases, we never hesitate to take a case to trial if we believe it serves our client's best interests.
We approach each case as if it may go to trial. Through a meticulous approach to case management, we have achieved many positive results on behalf of the people we serve.
